How to Cut Costs on Dealer Auto Transport

15 Sep 2020

auto dealer transportUnlike most individuals in need of auto transport services, dealers are often in need of bulk transport solutions. They often have to move a larger number of vehicles, which is not only a monumental exercise, but can also be a costly one.

All businesses understand the value of cutting costs. Dealers can indeed make some savings on their dealer car transport needs. Here are a few guidelines to follow.

1.      Manage Inventory Levels

Maintaining optimal inventory levels is a good way to ensure you are well stocked while still keeping costs down, especially those related to storing vehicles on the lot. Industry standards prescribe a day supply of 30 days for used vehicles and 45 days for new vehicles.

2.      Choose Terminal-To-Terminal Shipping

While it can be easier to have your vehicles delivered right to your lot, some locations are not easily accessible. Most providers have a designated terminal in various cities and towns where clients can go and pick up their vehicles. This can be much cheaper than requiring them to deliver the vehicles to your lot which may require some complicated moves for the trailer to access. Do remember that allowing your vehicle to remain at the terminal for more than a day may result in additional expenses being incurred.

3.      Be Flexible On Dates

When possible, it is a good idea to be flexible with pick-up and delivery dates. This may be a bit difficult in dealer auto transport as there are often schedules to adhere to. There are, however, good benefits associated with having your orders fulfilled during off-peak periods. Just as with any business, lower demand for services often prompts lower charges.

4.      Opt for Open Carriers

While closed carriers are the preference in ensuring safe delivery, they can be as much as 50% more expensive than open carriers. Seek an experienced shipper with drivers that have a good track record. This should be good enough to ensure your vehicles arrive in just as good condition as when they were picked up.

5.      Shop Around

Many providers offer dealer auto transport services. They welcome orders that feature multiple vehicles as it means being able to fill up their trailers quickly, allowing them to hit the road faster. Request for quotations from reputable providers. Initiate an online search to identify the top picks in your area.

Be sure to avoid notably low quoted deals. Undercutting the competition is often what newcomers to the business do to try and attract customers. Aim for those with a proven track record and clear communication. Try and strike a balance between affordability and experience. Check for discount deals on large shipping orders and off-peak scheduling.
