What To Do When Shipping Your Car Internationally

15 Feb 2022

car transportFor many people that relocate to another country, car transport becomes a necessity as they cannot imagine getting around in any other vehicle than the one they are accustomed to. In other cases, it could be a highly unique vehicle they want to add to their collection or have showcased in an event. Whatever the reason, this kind of transport service tends to become more complex when it involves crossing borders overseas.

Choose The Type of Transport

Cars can be shipped by road, sea or air. Your choice of transport will largely depend on the destination, the speed at which you want delivery, and your budget. When transporting on a trailer by road or sea, you will have a choice between open or enclosed shipping. Shipping your car in a container is more secure but will be more expensive. You will also need to wait for other vehicles to fill up the container if it is to be shared. Air transport is the most expensive but certainly faster.

Choose A Shipper

You will need to conduct some research and comparison into car shipping companies. Identify those that can undertake car transport from where you are to your desired destination. They should have an experienced logistics team that can properly advise you on documentation that you will need to prepare like proof of ownership, owner identification, and payment confirmation. Wrong documentation can prove costly and cause delays.

You should also ensure the shipping company is properly licensed, bonded, and insured. International shipping also means they will likely have to work with third-party carriers along the way. Find out if they too are properly licensed, bonded, and insured so you are fully covered, no matter what happens or where. You can also lookup information on the company online and with industry associations. Those with many official complaints or disputes should be avoided.

Prep Your Car

Check with your chosen car transport company for details on how to prepare your vehicle for transport. You will likely be advised that you cannot ship any other luggage in the vehicle, aside from what already pertains to it like the spare tire. There may even be limitations on the amount of fuel that should be in the tank. Be sure to have the vehicle detailed and document its condition fully at the time you deliver it to the transport company. This may help in case you need to make a claim later for damages.
